Dr. Ezinne Ogbureke
BDS (University of Nigeria), DMD (Tufts)
A distinguished educator, clinician, and advocate for comprehensive oral health, Dr. Ezinne Ogbureke has devoted her career to preparing future dental professionals to understand—and act on—the vital connection between oral and systemic health. As a full-time professor in the Department of General Practice and Dental Public Health at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, she brings academic rigor, clinical insight, and a strong commitment to patient-centered care to her work. Her foundation for this leadership includes a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from the University of Nigeria School of Dentistry in Enugu, Nigeria, earned in 1991, and a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts.
Building on that strong academic foundation, Dr. Ogbureke developed a career distinguished by breadth and adaptability. Her experience spans private practice, community dentistry, and mobile dental care in Maryland, providing her with first-hand insight into diverse clinical settings and patient populations. She began her academic career as an instructor at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston before transitioning to private practice. She later returned to academia at the Dental College of Georgia and brought this multifaceted experience to Houston in 2013.
This combination of academic and clinical experience informs the priorities that now define Dr. Ogbureke’s teaching. She champions the medical management of dental patients, oral cancer screening, and the recognition of oral manifestations of systemic disease as indispensable components of high-quality dental care. By integrating these principles into both the classroom and the clinic, she equips dental and dental hygiene students to deliver care that is attentive, comprehensive, and centered on the whole patient.
The impact of that educational vision is reflected in Dr. Ogbureke’s scholarship and the recognition it has received. In 2014, she earned a Dean’s Small Grant Award for the study “Evaluating Dental and Dental Hygiene Students’ Ability to Perform a Head and Neck Exam and Identify Oral Lesions in Everyday Clinical Practice.” In 2015, she co-authored a chapter in the book History of Salivary Proteomics. Her contributions were further recognized with the Dean’s Excellence Award in the Scholarship of Teaching in June 2017 and, in September 2017, when she became the first recipient of the American Association for Cancer Education’s Joseph F. O’Donnell Early Career Investigator Award. Through collaboration with colleagues, she has published more than 17 articles across a range of topics, further extending the reach of her work. She is also a graduate of the UT Health Education Fellowship Program.
Yet Dr. Ogbureke’s influence extends well beyond scholarship. She actively mentors students as they prepare table clinics and presentations for local and national meetings, helping them translate knowledge into confident professional engagement. Participation in community dental health screenings similarly carries her commitment to prevention and early detection beyond the university and into the communities it serves. Her teaching philosophy powerfully distills the holistic perspective at the heart of this work: “Treat the teeth but also take a keen look at the surrounding soft tissues.”
Taken together, Dr. Ogbureke’s teaching, scholarship, mentorship, and community service demonstrate a sustained commitment to advancing a more attentive and integrated standard of dental care. By inspiring future clinicians to look beyond the teeth and care for the whole patient, she is strengthening both professional education and the quality of care delivered to the public. Her influence on students, colleagues, and communities reflects a career defined not only by achievement, but also by purpose, prevention, and enduring impact. Beyond her professional contributions, Dr. Ogbureke and her husband, Dr. Kalu Ogbureke, are the parents of four children: Chinasa, Kalu Jr., Erinma, and David.
